With the cost of travel going up, on the ground and in the air, free airline vouchers showing up in your mailbox may seem like a dream come true. But, that dream could quickly turn into a nightmare with one particular offer we've heard about through the Better Business Bureau of Central and Eastern Kentucky.
The BBB has received questions and complaints about a voucher consumers received in the mail that reads, "Congratulations! Our Accounting Department shows that you have been awarded two round trip airline tickets to any airport in the U.S."
The mailing looks official and credible. Upon opening it, you see a US Airways logo.
The recipient is instructed to call a phone number to claim the gift. People who called the number told the BBB that they were informed they had to attend a "presentation" in order to get the voucher.
The voucher does say there are terms, conditions and restrictions. It also says that US Airways is not affiliated with the offer.
The company behind this mailing is VIP Travel out of Lexington, South Carolina. The BBB there has an unsatisfactory rating for VIP Travel due to unanswered and unresolved complaints.
In addition, the South Carolina Consumer Affairs Division has filed a lawsuit against VIP Travel for alleged deceptive practices.
Travel companies like VIP may offer free tickets or other prizes as an incentive to attend a session to hear their pitch. But, before signing up with any company, check them out with the BBB. You can do that by calling toll-free, 1-800-866-6668 or online at www.ky.bbb.org.
Remember, anything that is offered FREE, should be just that, FREE. If you receive an offer like the one from VIP Travel, that turns out to be not so free, Don't Fall For It.
