Bluegrass State Games & WTVQ 36 Team Up to Launch the 2007 Summer Games

  • The Bluegrass State Games is a non-profit program promoting amateur athletics across the Commonwealth. It is designed to provide Kentuckians of all ages and skill levels a wholesome avenue for positive development through sports and physical activity.
  • This year’s opening ceremonies will be held Friday, July 20, 2007 in Rupp Arena. Athletes and their families will be attending as well.
Why Health & Fitness?
  • Kentucky still ranks in the bottom half of the 50 states in the overall health of its residents (Morgan Quitno Press Release, 3/06)
  • The nation’s leading killer, heart disease, is even more prevalent in Kentucky.  Kentucky is in the Top 10 in this category (USA Today, 2/15/07)
  • The U.S. population age 65+ is expected to double in size within the next 25 years.  In the Central Kentucky area, the persons 50+ population has increased by almost 14% in less than four years (Nielsen, 5/03 vs. 2/07)
  • Kentucky is ranked the 5th heaviest state in the Nation. The obesity rate went from 25.8% in 2004 to 26.7% in 2006 in adults. Kentucky is one of 31 states where obesity rates rose in the past year. Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled from 1980 to 2004, from 5%-17%.  (Trust for American’s Health, 8/06)
