Open enrollment for the 2010 Medicare Part D prescription drug plan starts November 15 and lasts until December 31. This is the only time Kentucky’s seniors can add, re-enroll or make changes to their Medicare prescription drug plan. Open enrollment offers a good opportunity for seniors to review and evaluate their entire health care situation on a yearly basis. It is important for them to determine which drug plan is best by comparing the policies and making sure they choose the one which best fits their current healthcare needs and those of their family. For instance, if their prescriptions have changed over the year choosing a new
healthcare plan could be very beneficial.
Medicare Part D was created to help cover the costs of prescription drugs for seniors on Medicare. In addition, Medicare beneficiaries who have limited income and resources may qualify for extra help to pay for prescription drugs costs. This low-income subsidy from Medicare provides financial assistance for beneficiaries who have limited income and resources. Those who are eligible for this low-income subsidy will get help paying for their monthly premium, yearly deductible, prescription coinsurance and copayments and no gap in coverage. Last year, only 64 percent of Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in Part D meaning that many people are missing out on valuable coverage because they simply do not know about it. More still are unaware of the additional support available to Kentucky seniors with low income. Kentucky’s SHIP program helps seniors with Medicare questions and will be hosting open enrollment events throughout the state. If you have questions about Medicare Part D or the low-income subsidy, or if you would like to provide helpful information to Kentucky’s seniors about the program, please call the Kentucky State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) office or visit one of the Web sites below. Another Good Resource
I would like to add another resource which I find extremely helpful every year as I select my Prescription Drug and Medicare plans during the enrollment period. It is the search tool at http://www.PlanPrescriber.com You can either enter your zip code and find Prescription Drug and Medicare plans in your area or enter your current plan and compare it to others available in your area. I hope others find it as helpful as I have.
