Christmas trees, especially natural trees, are the source of many terrible accidents. Fires can be prevented if you take a few preventive measures. Check the tree's freshness by picking it up and dropping it on its trunk, ensuring that not many needles fall off. You want your tree to be as fresh as possible. Cut at least an inch off the trunk of the tree before you install it in its holder. This will allow the tree to draw in water more easily. The tree holder should be sturdy and hold the trunk firmly in a sufficient amount of water. You should check the water level once or twice daily, depending on the dryness of your home. Inspect anything electrical that you plan to put on your tree, making sure that the cords are free from breaks and worn spots. Use your best judgement, and don't risk any questionable situations. Turn off Christmas lights when you leave the house and when you're going to bed. And when Christmas is over, remove the tree from your house as soon as you can.
