Though they may not be in the form of immediate income, benefits are a very important part of your compensation. So when considering a job, be sure to ask what benefits they can offer. The most common benefit is medical coverage. Find out if the company pays all of your monthly premiums, or just a portion. Be sure to examine what kind of coverage you have, and any deductibles or co payments you'll be responsible for. Most larger companies offer retirement benefits. Some may even pay you a percentage of your former salary, after you retire. Or more commonly, they'll have a company fund, to which you may contribute during your career. The 401k is one such plan. Some companies will match a certain percentage of your contribution, up to a given amount. This is especially desirable, as it allows your account to grow at a much faster rate. A good benefit package can save you money on medical bills, or help build a nest egg for retirement. So don't forget to consider benefits, when negotiating for a new job.
