If you have a great deal of expertise in your field, you might be able to make a career as a consultant. Basically, a consultant's job is to examine the procedures at a given company, and suggest ways to improve their performance. In return for these services, he or she is usually paid a monthly retainer. You'll find consultants in many fields, like radio, marketing, computers, engineering, law, and accounting. For those who land enough big clients, independent consulting can be a lucrative job. But it's usually best suited to a sales type personality. After all, to get clients, you'll first have to sell yourself, and your skills, to other companies. There are also entire consulting firms who report on trends like business practices, or even advise what colors will be popular in the future. Still, another option is part time consulting. This allows retired people to stay active in their field, by working with companies on a per project basis.
