May marks the beginning of mosquito season.

Already states such as Pennsylvania and California are reporting their first cases of West Nile Virus.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Since West Nile Virus first appeared in the U.S. 12 years ago, many people became infected; more than 1,000 have died.

We've learned a lot about this mosquito borne illness since then, and how to cope with it. However, the virus is still in the U.S.; and because we had a relatively mild winter, mosquitoes will be plentiful this year.

Signs of West Nile Virus are much like the flu: headaches, achiness, extreme exhaustion, fever and disorientation. In some people with poor immune systems, it can be deadly. So it's best to see your doctor.

How can you avoid these annoying and potentially dangerous insects?

1. Always remember mosquitoes love water, they breed in it, so cut down on standing water where you live. Empty pet water bowls, kiddie pools and containers.

2. Try to wear long sleeves and long pants during the hours when mosquitoes are out. that's usually during the dawn and dusk hours.

3. And use bug spray and bug lanterns to keep them away when you're enjoying the outdoors.  Sounds simple, but these steps can prevent you from being bitten as well as contracting a serious virus.
