The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department says the number of confirmed flu cases in Lexington now stands at 78. Officials say more than 50 of those cases involve children. Health Department spokesman Kevin Hall says "Kentucky has started seeing its peak flu season in late February and early March, so anyone who hasn’t received a flu shot yet should still come out and get one." Hall goes on to say "flu shots are the best way to fight the flu and help prevent spreading it to other members of your family.”
Flu shots are available at the Public Health Clinic North, 805A Newtown Circle. No appointment is necessary. Flu shots cost $25, and Medicaid, Medicare B, cash, checks, credit cards and some insurances are accepted.
The Public Health Clinic North is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday; and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday.
The seasonal flu shot, which also provides protection against H1N1, is recommended to all people ages 6 months and older.
Last year, Lexington had 305 confirmed cases of the flu. The health department provided 5,526 flu vaccinations throughout the season.
