Baby Boomers, Exercise, And Limits

Some baby boomers may be pushing their bodies too far with exercise.
Baby boomers are on the move. They are hitting the gym and running marathons.

But all that exercise comes at a price.

According to the Centers For Disease Control, almost 2 1/2 million baby boomers go to emergency rooms for "over-exercising" every year. Orthopedists even have a name for it: Boomeritis. 

Some baby boomers get exercise injuries such as achilles tendon, rupturing calf muscles, and injuring their hips. But they keep on exercising.

Doctors say baby boomers like to exercise in part because it helps boost their endorphins and is a great way to be more social.

"You're seeing a lot more people who want to stay active and fit. they're really taking care of themselves more, and if there's some reason they can't stay fit, they want to fix it," said Dr. Letha Griffin, an orthopaedic surgeon.
