Friday, February 3, 2012: Wet Start to Weekend, Then a Bit Colder

The weekend is almost here, and while the mild, pleasant weather continues this morning, skies will turn a bit cloudier this afternoon before rain arrives tonight.  Highs will be in the upper 50s again today.

Soaking rain will arrive from the west tonight, and it will continue through most of Saturday.  This is the same storm system producing blizzard conditions in eastern Colorado, northwestern Kansas and southwestern Nebraska, but we find ourselves firmly locked on the mild side of the storm track.

The storm will produce between 1/2" and 1" of rain across most of the area on Saturday.  Here is the latest WRF forecast for the event.  You'll notice that in general, the heavier rainfall is likely in southern Kentucky, with less significant totals to the north.  The WRF happens to produce a bulls-eye of more than 1.5" near Adair County.

The steady, widespread rain will exit to the east on Saturday night and early Sunday.  The primary American models, early this morning (06z GFS, 06z WRF) are shy with the arrival of colder air on the back end of this system, at least in terms of it reaching Kentucky before precipitation exits.  However, the Canadian model (while a bit of an outlier) holds on to limited hope for a few snow showers or flurries on Sunday afternoon and evening, as temperatures fall throughout the afternoon of Super Bowl Sunday.

We don't expect any snow impact, and the chance of even seeing a few snow showers or flurries as Super Bowl Sunday winds down is fairly low - I'd put it around 30%.  With that said, don't be surprised if a few snow showers or flurries blow across the Bluegrass on Sunday afternoon.

Have a great weekend!  Meteorologist Lauren Jones will have you covered over the next three nights on ABC 36!
