Tuesday, February 21, 2012: Windy Tuesday, Mild Midweek, Stormy Late on Thursday

It's a windy one, and if you're checking in from the Bluegrass Region this morning, you'll notice some of those low clouds racing across the sky.  Scattered showers will continue to slide across the area, although from midmorning through the rest of the day, most of the activity will be near and north of I-64.  The afternoon will be drier than the morning.

The bigger story is the wind.  Low pressure to our northwest is headed toward the Great Lakes, and that is helping to draw a strong breeze from the south.  Winds will gust to 40 or 45 mph in many areas today.  Wind Advisories are in effect across central Kentucky, and a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect across eastern Kentucky.  (A Lake Wind Advisory is a small step down from a Wind Advisory... and it is technically a heads-up to the very slim minority of you who might be on a boat this February day.)  Both of these advisories will expire at 4 PM.

So far, here are the peak wind gusts *** UPDATED THROUGH 1:20 PM ***.

-

-

Temperatures are on a steady climb as we compare today's high with tomorrow's, and then Thursday's high temperature.  We should reach 53° today, 57° tomorrow and then we have a good chance of soaring all the way into the middle 60s on Thursday.  We expect Lexington to reach 65° on the 4th day of the workweek.

-

The warm-up will come to a screeching halt on Thursday night as an aggressive cold front arrives from the northwest.  Scattered showers and some thunderstorms will accompany the front, on Thursday evening into Thursday night.  Some of the storms in southern Kentucky could potentially become severe.

-

-

We haven't seen much of a severe weather threat lately, but that may change on Thursday after our midweek spring preview.  Again, the most likely areas to see a severe storm will be those of you in southern Kentucky.

-

Stay tuned... and until then, enjoy the warm-up!
