Tuesday, January 31, 2012: Ending January in the Mid 60s Before Rain Arrives

Good Tuesday morning, folks.  This has been an unusually MILD January, and today we'll put that trend on steriods.  We'll close out the month with highs in the middle 60s!  Today will be day four of that active breeze from the southwest.  As warm as this is, the "dead" of winter does have potential to be even warmer in Kentucky, as record highs for January 31st are in the 70s across the major reporting sites in the area.

With that said, it is plenty warm.  This map shows how our 6 AM temperatures differed from our average low temperature for this time of the year.  You'll notice that most of the nation is running warmer than average today, and we are about 20° above average early today!

The business hours, this Tuesday, will remain dry across the entire area.  Moisture will arrive this evening and overnight, and scattered showers will increase in coverage tomorrow.  The source of this moisture is twofold.  A plume of higher-dewpoint air is spreading north and east out of the Gulf Coast.  Meanwhile, a cold front is marching south and east from the northern Plains.  With that said, this midweek system has limited firepower.  Take a look at the latest AVN / GFS forecast for total rainfall through Thursday morning (which just happens to be Groundhog Day).

The AVN / GFS puts most of us in the 0.25" to 0.50" range, although part of northeastern KY may have a better chance at creeping above half of an inch.  A few folks may hear a stray rumble of thunder late tonight or early tomorrow, but no severe weather is expected.

Thanks for stopping by the weather blog, everybody.  The end of the 7-Day forecast has something resembling early February weather, although we're not there yet.
