Tuesday, January 24, 2012: The Only Storm Today is From the Sun... Greatest in 7 Years!

Good Tuesday morning, folks.  High pressure is crossing Kentucky today, paving the way for a bright sky with only a few clouds.  We'll enjoy a slightly milder-than-average high around 47 this afternoon with lighter winds.

The only "storm" today is from the sun.  A massive CME (or coronal mass ejection - - basically a huge increase in solar energy output) is peaking at midmorning.  An excessive swarm of charged energy particles will increase the chances of seeing the auroras tonight, at least in higher latitudes.  You can read more all about this at space.com.

From astronomy to hydrology, the Kentucky River continues to run very high through east-central Kentucky.  A Flood Advisory remains in effect in Estill County until tomorrow afternoon.

The Kentucky River is slowly recovering from not one, but two heavy rain events in eastern Kentucky.  Friday night / Saturday morning only yielded some light rain showers in the Bluegrass Region (with a little freezing rain in some spots).  Eastern Kentucky saw quite a bit more, though, and this caused the Kentucky River to spike about 1' below flood stage on Saturday.  The river's fall has been delayed by the additional heavy rain that fell with Monday's storms.

Downstream, the Valley View Ferry remains closed today.

Since things are quiet now, as we continue to brace ourselves for another round of wet weather from Wednesday evening through Thursday, I'll leave you with three great photos from Jonathan Durham of Laurel County.  He sent another great batch of sunset photos, this time, from last night.

Thanks again, Jonathan.

Have a great day, everybody... enjoy the quiet weather while we have it.
