Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012:  The Heat Is On!  A Midsummer Preview

Things are really heating up out there, this Wednesday.  Today and tomorrow, we'll soar to 87°, and this will be our warmest since September.  Those of you who have a swimming pool may be tempted to open it up very soon, as highs will remain in the 80s through the weekend.

The warmer air is really building in because the front that has been nearly stationary for the past few days has lifted to our north.  Some strong thunderstorms accompanied the front as it lifted north and east, yesterday.  Locally, we had some hail up to the size of quarters (1" diameter) in parts of Magoffin, Washington, Marion and Grant Counties yesterday afternoon and evening.  Meanwhile, several tornadoes touched down in parts of Illinois and Indiana.

Now, with the front well to our north, most of today's severe weather will occur in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, into northern West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Temperatures are well above normal.  Here's a look at how this morning's temperatures compare to average.  You'll notice that we are not alone with the heat.  Much of the central and eastern United States is warmer than normal for early May, with the exception of the Northeast

Over the next two afternoons, heat and humidity will help to produce a few isolated thunderstorms.  They won't cover as much ground as what we dealt with on Monday and Tuesday.  To get a very general overview of precipitation coverage, here is the latest WRF forecast for precipitation between now and Thursday evening.  Some areas will miss the t-storms, through Thursday.

Enjoy the big summer preview!
