Friday Morning, February 24, 2012: Storm Report Recap, Now Winter's Blustery Return

Good Friday morning, folks!  In the big picture, we dodged a bit of a bullet.  Yes, there was intense lightning and thunder with many of the storms last night, and there were some reports of hail and wind, but we avoided tornadoes.  This morning, our neighbors in the Carolinas and parts of Virginia are gearing up for the same storm system to bring them a potentially more significant outbreak of severe weather.

Here is a look at the storm reports from last night, and peak wind gusts through 2:10 PM.

-

The Cox's Creek report was especially impressive, not because of the hail size, but because it has been a while since central and eastern Kentucky has seen even just a localized area receive enough hail to cover the ground.

-

The cold front has exited to the east, into Virginia.  Now, temperatures are falling across the entire area.  In Lexington, the temperature at midnight was a balmy 60°.  At 5 AM, we fell to 55°.  At midmorning, we have dropped to 48°, and we will continue downward, as Lauren mentioned in her post last night.

-

The transition back to winter is a WINDY one, with winds occasionally gusting to 40 mph.  Wind Advisories are up and running once again for central and northern Kentucky, with a Lake Wind Advisory across eastern and southeastern Kentucky for the daytime hours.

-

-

That is a west wind, today, delivering some colder air that was up in the Dakotas and the northern High Plains a day or two ago.  We'll fall into the middle 20s tonight, and Saturday will be about 10° below average, with highs only in the upper 30s.  Average highs for today's date are in the upper 40s.

-

There is no doubt it has been a windy week as the seasons clash.

-

Enjoy the colder start to your weekend, followed by a beautiful stretch from Sunday into the start of next week.
