Friday, February 19, 2012: Snow On Its Way, Arctic Blast to Follow

Good Friday morning, everybody.  We are bracing ourselves for the most significant bout of winter weather so far this season.  A batch of widespread snow will cross the region this afternoon, tonight and into the day tomorrow.  We've only had 1.8" of snow all winter so far, and we expect 1" to 2" across MOST of the area with this round.  As temperatures tumble this evening, there will be a significant impact on the roads, with temps falling into the 20s as snow continues.  In light of this, the National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories across the entire area for this afternoon, tonight and Saturday morning.

-

The heaviest snow and most disruptive weather will occur between around 5 or 6 PM today and 5 or 6 AM on Saturday.  Roads will become very slick as temperatures fall into the lower 20s during this time.  Saturday's recovery will be slow, as well, with temperatures only hovering in the middle 20s as additional snow showers fall.  That'll be about 20° below average!

Here is what we expect:

-

-

If this system is an overachiever (if we end up near the upper end of our snowfall forecast), we COULD conceivably double our winter snow total with this one storm, in Lexington.  We'll have to see how it all evolves, as 1" is every bit as likely as 2".

-

On the back end of this system, after Saturday's high of 25°, we'll fall to 13° on Saturday night / Sunday morning, which could become the coldest night so far this winter.  Sunday's high will remain about a dozen degrees below average, with highs only around 32°.

-

Bundle up!  We'll have the latest on ABC 36.
