Wednesday, April 25, 2012: Severe T-Storms Return to Area Tonight

Good Wednesday morning, everybody.  We're making progress through the workweek... and before we know it, the weekend will be here.

We've had an UNUSUALLY QUIET MONTH, so far, when it comes to severe weather.  Take a look at these stats, compiled by the NWS in Louisville:

The NWS in Louisville (which handles southern Indiana and central Kentucky) issued FAR MORE WARNINGS in April of 2011, and very, very few through the first 23 days of this month.

April 1-23, 2011:  NWS Louisville issued 106 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 46 Tornado Warnings

April 1-23, 2012:  NWS Louisville issued 5 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 0 Tornado Warnings

That's QUITE THE CONTRAST!

Today's daytime weather will be on the drier side for most of us, as a warm breeze from the south boosts temperatures to near 73.  Only an isolated thunderstorm or two is anticipated during the day.  A much more widespread round of thunderstorms will arrive late this evening and overnight tonight, and some of these storms will be severe with large hail and potential for strong straight-line winds.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has placed all of central, northern and most of eastern Kentucky under a slight risk for severe weather.  Locally, the threat will be during the overnight hours.

Coverage of these thunderstorms will be widespread, with most - if not all of the area - seeing at least a storm or two.  Heavy thunderstorms will be more likely to the north than to the south.

Here is the latest WRF forecast for rainfall between 2 AM and 5 AM tonight / early Thursday morning.

I'll have a full update on the severe storm chances on ABC 36 at Noon and 12:30, and then Chief Meteorologist Jennifer Schack will be in with evening updates at 5, 6 and 11.

Thanks for stopping by the weather blog.
