Monday, April 23, 2012: Unseasonably Cool & Breezy... Rare Late-April Snowstorm 1-2 States Away

Good Monday morning, folks!  It's been an unseasonably chilly weekend... yesterday's high of 50° was a far cry from our average of 68°.  We'll be very breezy today with winds occasionally gusting over 25 mph, and temperatures only struggling into the middle 50s.

Skies are beginning to clear from west to east across the area.  Here's a look at the midmorning visible satellite picture.  Eastern Kentucky remains cloudy, but the back edge is near Lexington.

The big news is the heavy snow in parts of West Virginia, western Maryland and central / western Pennsylvania, up into upstate New York.  The rare late-April snowstorm is causing tens of thousands of power outages in the interior Northeast as leaves are on trees, collecting excessive snow, and branches are snapping.  Here's a look at the midmorning radar picture.

The westernmost snowflakes have barely clipped far eastern Kentucky this morning, and now we're watching these slide away to the east.

Take a look at some of these snow totals in central and west-central Pennsylvania.  The snow is still falling in these areas.

Bringing it back home, our next round of precipitation in central Kentucky will come in the form of rain as a new disturbance arrives on Tuesday evening.  Look out for scattered showers and even a few thunderstorms from Tuesday evening into Tuesday night.  Here is the latest WRF forecast for precipitation, between 8 PM and 11 PM on Tuesday.

Thanks for stopping by the weather blog.  Be patient - the warmer, more typical April weather will be back by Wednesday afternoon.

Have a great start to your week.

Geoff
