December 7, 2011: Rain Changes to Accumulating Snow for Some, South and East of Lexington

Good Wednesday morning, everybody.  It's a busy one in the weather center, as rain will mix with and change to accumulating snow, but only in SOME areas today.  The "action" today will generally be south and east of Lexington.

Before we get to that, a big CONGRATS to Chief Meteorologist Jennifer Schack and her husband Jason, on the birth of their baby boy, WESTON JAMES on Tuesday afternoon at 4:54 PM!  We're awating a name, although we do know that the baby is 21" long and weighs 7 lbs, 6 oz.  We're so happy for you!

Soaking rain continues to fall across eastern and southeastern Kentucky this morning, and in the past hour (8-9 AM), it has begun to mix with and change over to snow in some areas (like London and Jackson, according to two reports).  This morning, I drove through a rain / sleet / snow mix as I came down I-75 from Georgetown to Lexington, although that was much lighter than what many of your are dealing with to the south and east.

Upper-level energy is rotating into the area from western Tennessee, and this will enhance the amount of precip.  It will also likely budge the northwestern edge of rain/snow mix a little farther north and west, closer to the Lexington area around midday or this afternoon.

As far as snowfall amounts are concerned, accumulations will be very limited to the north of highway 80, with only some limited potential for a dusting on grassy surfaces in the southeastern part of the Bluegrass Region.  However, 1" or potentially 2" could accumulate in the grass in far southern and southeastern Kentucky.  The more significant accumulations of 2" to 4" will be limited to the higher elevations of Bell, Harlan, Letcher and Pike Counties.

In light of that, the National Weather Service in Jackson, KY has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for far southeastern KY, in the Virginia Border Counties.

You may have also noticed the Flood Warning for Nelson County.  After a few days below flood stage, the Rolling Fork River has risen above flood stage once again.  Also, Herrington Lake continues to rise, now 5' above flood stage.

To those of you in southeastern KY, enjoy the snow!
