Thursday, March 29, 2012: A Pleasant Thursday Between Two Rounds of Strong Storms

Good Thursday morning, folks!  I hope you're enjoying this beautiful day.  Most of us started the morning in the 40s, with southern Kentucky slightly milder in the 50s.  Temperatures will recover, rising into the middle to upper 60s this afternoon under sunshine that will be filtered by some thin, cirrus clouds.

It's nice to have a break, on the heels of yesterday's storms.  We had some significant hail-producers, in the late afternoon and early evening.  Many reports of small hail were filed.  A number of reports of larger hail met the severe standard (1" diameter or larger), including in Georgetown.  Here are the severe reports.

-

The western end of Scott County, near the Franklin County line, had enough hail to cover the ground for a little while.  Lots of hail was also reported near Mount Sterling and into Island City of Owsley County.  Louisville had several reports around midafternoon, and there was another cluster of storm reports in extreme northeastern Kentucky, near Ashland and into the Huntington, WV area.

-

Today, things are much quieter with high pressure in control.  A new storm system will cause thunderstorms to develop later today out in the Great Plains and in the Missouri Valley.  We will stay dry.

-

-

Tomorrow, that storm system will slide into the Ohio Valley, and another round of severe thunderstorms will be likely, late on Friday.  Wind, hail and possibly a few isolated tornadoes will be possible in the Ohio Valley, from Kentucky into Indiana and Ohio.

-

-

We'll keep a close eye on the Friday PM situation as we close out the week.  In the meantime, we'll have updates on ABC 36 at Noon, 12:30, and again at 5, 6 and 11.

-

Enjoy the day!
