Thursday, March 22, 2012: Near-Record Warm Stretch Will End With Showers & T-Storms

Good Thursday morning, everybody.  Most of us have really enjoyed this prolonged stretch of unusually warm weather.  Most days this week have come close to matching a very similar warm stretch of mid to late-March days back in 1907, when the Bluegrass saw highs in the lower 80s.  Yesterday, we were one degree shy of March 22, 1907's highs in Lexington and Frankfort.  It turns out that both Lexington and Frankfort peaked at 82° yesterday, and both cities reached 83°, precisely 105 years earlier.

Records come a bit easier in Jackson and London, where the books don't go back that far.  Both Jackson and London broke record highs yesterday, and Jackson also broke last year's record warmest low for March 21st.

A few isolated thunderstorms developed yesterday in eastern Kentucky, and one even crossed into the east / southeast side of Lexington.  One thunderstorm in eastern Kentucky produced some pea-sized hail about a mile east of Paintsville in Johnson County.

A much greater chance for hail will come with Friday's thunderstorms.  An occluded front will arrive tomorrow, and with cooler air aloft, scattered, strong thunderstorms will hail may develop on Friday afternoon.  The Storm Prediction Center has placed central and most of eastern Kentucky into a slight risk for severe weather for Friday.  Along with hail, there is a secondary chance of strong straight-line winds, and potentially a very isolated tornado in the Ohio Valley or Mid South tomorrow.

-

Enjoy this final warm day before a 10° drop in temperatures on Friday, and another step down into the 60s for highs this weekend.
