Thursday, May 3rd, 2012: Near-Record Heat, Strong Storms to Return, Friday

Good Thursday morning, folks.  The summer preview will continue for a few more days, although by the numbers, the warmest day in this stretch was probably yesterday.

We flirted with record territory on Wednesday, especially when it came to our low temperatures.  Overnight lows tied the record warmest for May 2nd in Lexington and London.  In Jackson, a new record high and record warmest low were set.  Here are the stats.

-

Today will be another very warm day, although highs will be tempered, slightly, by a few extra clouds as a low pressure system passes to our south and southeast.  Highs will be about 14° above normal today, as we peak near 85°.

-

The low pressure system to our south should help to produce a few isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.  The most likely area to see a storm will be southern Kentucky, with only a very stray t-storm or two near or north of I-64.  In other words, much of the Bluegrass Region will likely stay dry today.  Well to our north, from the Great Lakes to the Upper Mississippi Valley, there will be some severe weather today.

-

-

The front that has been wavering across the Ohio Valley over the past week is currently well to our north.  It will sag south, closer to the Ohio River late on Friday.  As it approaches, another round of strong to potentially severe thunderstorms will develop.  Locally, central Kentucky could see wind and hail with some of the late afternoon and evening thunderstorms as the workweek ends and the weekend begins.

-

-

Stay tuned!  We'll keep an eye on the potentially severe set-up over the next 30 hours, and we'll have you covered, late on Friday when storms develop.

-

Enjoy the summer preview!
