Tuesday, February 28, 2012: Pleasant Today, Then Strong to Severe Storms Late Tonight / Tomorrow

Good Tuesday morning, folks!  Today will be another beautiful day with highs soaring to near 60 degrees.  Sunshine will gradually give way to some increasing cloud cover in the afternoon, ahead of an approaching warm front.  The warm front will lift into Kentucky from western Tennessee tonight, and some spotty showers and thunderstorms will be possible as early as this evening.  Thunderstorms will become more widespread late tonight, with the potential for some severe storms late at night, especially from near the western end of Lake Cumberland, west across western Kentucky.  Here is a look at the latest Severe Weather Outlook for today and tonight.

-

Late tonight, the storms may still be intense, but they will likely be weakening as they arrive from the west.  After they push through the area in the morning, we may see a break for a few hours.  The most intense part of this storm system will likely be a second cluster of storms immediately ahead of the cold front.  This second round will strengthen across central Kentucky around midday and into the afternoon.  The entire region is under the slight risk for severe weather with the daytime round.

By Wednesday evening, most of the action should be sliding across eastern Kentucky, and dry weather will return overnight.

-

Some of the storms will be heavy, but they will move east without stalling over any particular area, thanks to strong winds aloft.  Therefore, total rainfall will be less than an inch, in most areas.  The latest NAM forecast produces a local maximum in precip of about 0.87" near Maysville.  We don't want to take that literally, but you get the idea... 0.5" to 0.75" is fairly likely across most of the area.

Thanks for stopping by the weather blog.  We'll have updates throughout the day during our newscasts.  Tonight would be a great night to have that NOAA weather radio on, ESPECIALLY for those of you in the southwestern part of our area.
