Tuesday, June 19, 2012: Heating Up, Rain Is Scarce...

Good Tuesday morning, folks.

Summer doesn't OFFICIALLY begin until tomorrow evening at 7:09 PM.  However, it sure has felt a little summerlike this week.  Temperatures so far this month are still running 2.6° COOLER than average, but over the next few days, we'll be running a good 5-7° above normal.

Here is a summerlike sunset shot from Renea Holman in Harrodsburg.  Thanks for snapping this last night and sharing it with us, Renea.

Yes, we have had some spotty hit-or-miss thunderstorms over the past few days (most widespread on Sunday), but in the big picture, the past 90 days have been drier than normal.  Here is a look at our percent of normal rainfall since the middle of March.

The Climate Prediction Center has completed the weekly update of their maps, and now, the Palmer Drought Index indicates that we are in a moderate drought, across central and eastern Kentucky.

Heat with relatively low humidity will not help our cause through midweek, as conditions will lead to rapid evaporation and evapotranspiration (evaporation directly from plant moisture).  Thunderstorms will be very isolated, and restricted to southeastern Kentucky's mountains and coalfields.  Central Kentucky should stay dry through Wednesday night.

Here is the latest GFS forecast for today's showers and thunderstorms.  You'll notice the only isolated activity should be in the highest elevations along the Virginia line.

Stay cool out there!
