Friday, January 27, 2012: Heavy Rain Recap, Turning Colder, and Light Mix on Saturday

Good Friday morning, folks.  We've made it almost through the workweek, and we're drying out on the heels of last night's heavy rain.  Reports of flooding and problems were fairly isolated, in northern Kentucky and also in southern parts of our area.

-

Now, temperatures are tumbling and only a day after highs near 60 degrees, regionwide (with a record-tying 63 in Jackson), we are right back near normal.  Here is a forecast for the 24-hour temperature change from 7 PM yesterday to 7 PM today.

In the world of the GFS / AVN forecast, this is a nearly 20 degree drop from Thursday evening to Friday evening.  We've already seen temperatures tumble by 20 degrees in the past 24 hours at midday.  Throw in some wind and persistent clouds, and it sure has a "cold" feel!

-

A weak disturbance will continue to approach, and it should arrive LATE tonight into the early hours of Saturday.  Temperatures will be marginal, and a light mix of a few rain showers, snow showers and some sleet pellets will be likely across most of the area for a short time, early on Saturday.  Precipitation amounts will be very limited (probably 0.05" of total precipitation or less, liquid equivalent) among any and all precipitation types.

-

Here is one of the Short Range Ensemble Forecasts for precipitation type at 10 AM on Saturday.  You'll notice that Kentucky is in prime territory to see a mix.

-

-

Bundle up!  January is back, at least for a few days.

-

Have a great weekend!

-
