Friday, December 9, 2011: Flood Update Before Arctic Chill Arrives

Good Friday morning, folks!  It's a bittersweet morning here at the big three-six, as we're saying "goodbye" to our beloved Kristi Runyon.  Kristi has been anchoring our morning and noon newscasts for most of the past decade, and she's been with WTVQ for 12 years.  In 1999, Kristi joined the ranks as a news reporter.  She will be deeply missed, but we are excited for her new career.  Three things come to mind with Kristi: her TALENT, her HONESTY and her INTEGRITY.  She leaves a great legacy here.

Late today / this evening, a strong but moisture-starved cold front will cross the area, packing a punch with some arctic air in its wake.  The coldest air of the season will be here this weekend, with a low of 22° tonight, a high only reaching 35° on Saturday and Saturday night being the heart of the chill, with a low of 18°.

A few spotty snow flurries are possible, but MOST of the flakes will pass to our northeast late today and tonight.

The dry weather is giving us a good chance to recover from the recent round of heavy rain and flooding.  Flood Advisories do remain in effect along the Cumberland River in Whitley County, and along the Kentucky River in Estill and Lee Counties.

All bodies of water have crested in the problem areas at this point.  Herrington Lake does remain 3' above flood stage, and it continues to fall steadily thanks to some intervention at the dam.

The Kentucky River is about 2' below flood stage this morning, and it continues to fall, near Ravenna.

The Cumberland River is about 3' below flood stage in Whitley County, also falling at this point.

STAY WARM this weekend, and enjoy the bright skies!
