Memorial Day (Monday), May 28, 2012: Beryl Makes Landfall... We Remain Hot

Good Monday morning, folks!

It's been a hot holiday weekend.  On Saturday, we reached 90° for the first time since last summer.  On Sunday, Lexington peaked at 92°, only 1° shy of the record for May 27th from 1911.  While May 27th was hotter, 101 years ago, the record books don't go that far back in Jackson and London, so it is easier to break records in these two locations.  Jackson and London reached 90°, which was enough to break the daily record highs by 2° in both spots.  Jackson's low of 69° was also warm enough to break the record warmest low for any May 27th in the past 31 years in Breathitt County.

-

Today, we'll round out our 3-day heat wave with a high near 90°.  By the end of the week, we'll be about 20° cooler, so if you want some good pool time, today is your day.

-

Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall just after midnight last night, near Jacksonville Beach, Florida.  At that time, Beryl had maximum sustained winds estimated near 70 mph.  The tropical storm has rapidly weakened over land, and the strongest sustained winds are now down to 40 mph.  Beryl will continue to weaken over northern Florida and southern Georgia, and it will become a tropical depression today.

-

-

Beryl will curve north and eventually northeast, and the storm will probably curve sharply enough to emerge over the Atlantic again, east of the Carolinas.  When this happens, it could reorganize into a tropical storm again, later this week, as it accelerates northeast into the North Atlantic.

If you are a veteran, or if you are currently serving in the military, we appreciate the sacrifices and risks you have taken and continue to take to protect our freedom.  The American quality of life would not be nearly where it is today if it weren't for your service.

-

We appreciate you.
