Friday Morning, April 20, 2012: A Great, Warm Friday Before Showers & T-Storms, Then Chilly!

Before we take a look at the weather, I wanted to share this map of eastern KY... you can see a few "tornado scars" in eastern Kentucky from the March 2nd outbreak.  The raw image was taken 13 days ago, and after seeing it, I noticed you could easily see the tornado tracks in the wake of the West Liberty and Salyersville tornadoes.

Weatherwise, it's going to be a beautiful day, at least through "business hours", as we close out the workweek.  We're on the road to 75 degrees, and sunshine will gradually mix with some clouds today.  Most of the day will be dry, making for a great time at Keeneland, out on the trails, on the bike, or whatever!

However, get ready for some changes.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms will arrive this evening and tonight as a strong cold front pushes into Kentucky.  Rain will be most likely between 9 PM this Friday evening and noon on Saturday.

Take a look at the latest GFS forecast for rainfall.  You'll notice that the northwestern half of our area will likely see between 1/4" and 1/2", while southeastern Kentucky is more likely to receive slightly heavier rain, in the ballpark of 1/2" to 3/4".

On the heels of this front, temperatures will turn sharply colder.  We'll be about 10° below average on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the 50s, and lows frequently in the 30s.  April is temporarily giving way to March.

With a large trough across the eastern United States, a heavy snowfall will accumulate in parts of the interior Northeast.  This could rival a major April spring snow from 1928 in some areas.  We'll be in the drier side of the trough, where a series of weak disturbances will produce occasional sprinkles and light rain showers on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Enjoy this warm weather while we have it!  We'll miss it, this weekend and early next week.
