Monday, January 30, 2012: Remaining Breezy, Increasingly Mild

I hope you've all had a great weekend!  Yes, it was a bit chilly, and winds were active, but in the big picture, aside from a gloomy Saturday morning, the weekend was a pretty decent time.  My family and I went on an "off-season" hike on Saturday afternoon at Red River Gorge, and it when shielded from the wind, it wasn't too cold.  After highs in the 40s this past weekend, we will be back into the 50s today.  In fact, today will be the 28th day with a high at or above 50° in Lexington since December 1st.  We're on target for 54° this afternoon in Lexington and 60° tomorrow.

Here is a look at yesterday's peak wind gusts.  Lexington happened to top the statewide list.

-

Gusts today may crack 30 mph, but we probably won't rival what we dealt with yesterday.

-

The next storm system will arrive Tuesday evening with scattered showers evolving into a more widespread rain on Wednesday.  This does not look like a "high-end" event, with most places seeing around - or less than - 1/2" of rain.

Here is a look at the latest WRF forecast for midweek precipitation.  Locally, this will all fall as rain.

On the heels of the midweek rain, another storm system will arrive at the beginning of the weekend.  This one will also begin in liquid rain form, but colder air will rush into Kentucky on the back end, causing a changeover from rain to snow showers on Saturday evening into Sunday, most likely.  Yes, we still have 5-6 days to tweak the forecast, but that is the way it appears at this point.  Stay tuned!

I'll leave you with a couple of bird photos from Karla Mangold Reeves in Stanton.  Thanks for sharing these with us, Karla - we truly appreciate it!

Have a great day!  Enjoy the mild weather while we have it.
