John Calipari announces additions to Kentucky's basketball schedule for the upcoming season and beyond, including the return of the Tar Heels.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - John Calipari announced on his website, CoachCal.com
, Wednesday night that Kentucky will bring North Carolina back on its schedule; that he's working on an annual series with Duke; and the UK men's and women's teams will play a doubleheader against Baylor at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
For the 2012-'13 season, we already knew UK would play Duke in Chicago's United Center. But Calipari says he is working with Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski on a multi-year deal to play at neutral sites around the country.
Calipari says North Carolina will return to the schedule for the 2013-'14 season. He added that he wants to play UNC on the road in years UK plays Louisville at home and vice versa.
Calipari made the statement he expects UK to play one tough nonconference road and home game each season. The Louisville and North Carolina series seem to fill that quota.
Baylor will visit Rupp Arena next season. In return, the Kentucky men's and women's teams will play a doubleheader against Baylor during the 2013-'14 season at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
Also, potentially on deck for the 2013-'14 season is a game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. That is still in the planning stage, according to Calipari.
The Cats' coach wants his teams to play at least one, possibly two, games inside a football stadium or large dome to prepare for the NCAA tournament venues. He says he believes UK would've won it all two seasons ago had his team played in a dome during the regular season. "Our guys weren’t prepared for it," Calipari says on his website.
In addition to nonconference games against Duke, Maryland, Baylor, Louisville and Morehead State for the upcoming season, Calipari says Kentucky will play a yet to be determined Big East opponent on the road. Some reports claim that opponent will be the Georgetown Hoyas.
