Kentucky offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders tells why they chose Jalen Whitlow over Patrick Towles to backup starter Max Smith.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - If regular starter Maxwell Smith can play against South Carolina Saturday, true freshman Jalen Whitlow would get the call at quarterback for Kentucky.
UK offensive coordinator Randy Sanders says Whitlow knows about 10% of the playbook right now.
Sanders says the decision was made to go with Whitlow over the highly-touted, reigning Kentucky Mr. Football Patrick Towles because Whitlow is a better runner than Towles. Sanders added that when it comes to young quarterbacks, running ability is what separates them because of how important that is for a freshman QB.
