Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips announced Monday that Maxwell Smith will be the starting quarterback.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sophomore Maxwell Smith was named Kentucky's starting quarterback on Monday. Senior Morgan Newton, who was the starter to begin last season, will be Smith's backup.
Head coach Joker Phillips said that he has not had enough time to determine who the third QB is on the depth chart, freshmen Patrick Towles or Jalen Whitlow.
Smith replaced Newton during the Mississippi State game last season after Newton left with a shoulder injury.
Smith ended up playing in eight games last year, including three starts, and threw for 819 yards while completing 54.9% of his passes with four touchdowns to four interceptions.
