MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Lyonell Gaines, a 6-foot-6 forward who has already played in 64 Division I games, has joined the Morehead State men's basketball program. He will sit out in 2013-14 and have two years of eligibility beginning with the 2014-15 season.

Gaines comes to MSU from Summit League member IUPUI. He averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 24 minutes per contest as a freshman in 2011-12. He then averaged 5.3 points and 4.4 boards in 20 minutes per tilt as a sophomore in 2012-13.

"Lyonell was looking to transfer, and we're really glad he chose Morehead State," Head Coach Sean Woods said. "Lyonell has the potential to be an important player for us. He's long, athletic, runs the floor well and should be a great fit for our style of play."

Gaines ranked second among IUPUI players in field-goal percentage (.538) and offensive rebounds (75) as a freshman. He then paced the Jaguars in offensive boards (60) and placed second in total rebounds (142) his sophomore season.

Gaines landed a spot on the prestigious Kentucky All-Star Team following his senior campaign at Eastern High School in Louisville. He averaged 16.0 points and 7.8 rebounds in 2010-11 while playing for the state's top-ranked squad.

"It's unfortunate Lyonell has to sit out a year (like all of our Division I transfers), but it will be a great opportunity for him to learn our system," Woods said. "He has the potential to make big contributions for our program on both ends of the floor."
