MSU Student Veteran Emily Curry Gets Free Trip To OVC Tourney

Morehead State sophomore headed to Nashville for two nights as part of "Hoops for Heroes" campaign.
MOREHEAD, Ky. - As part of the 'Hoops For Heroes' initiative set forth by the Ohio Valley Conference, the Morehead State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) helped raise money to send a military veteran to this year's OVC Basketball Tournament.

The SAAC helped raise over $1,000 by holding a "Penny Wars" competition between each sport.

This year's recipient is Emily Curry. The Afton, Wyo., native is a sophomore at MSU.

"Our athletic department is so grateful to everyone who donated money this year," Assistant AD & Senior Woman Administrator Sara Larson said. "We had terrific participation from a wide variety of people on our campus. Emily and her family have an incredible story. They are true heroes and don't get enough credit for the sacrifices they have made in behalf of our country. We are so glad Emily and a guest will be able to enjoy the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Tournaments next week in Nashville."

Curry, along with her father and five of her brothers, have each been deployed overseas. For their dedication to the Armed Forces, her family has been featured in the New York Times.

After spending four years in the National Guard, Curry became active duty in the Army. She has been stationed at Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Polk, La. Curry was also deployed for 15 months in Iraq with Echo Company 2-4 Infantry 10th Mountain Division.

While deployed, she met her husband Everett. After serving eight years of military duty, Emily retired from the military in November 2010. She plans to apply for a spot in MSU's radiology technology program this May.

The honorees receive a two-night hotel stay in Nashville, up to four tickets to Friday and Saturday's tournament sessions, along with gas and meal gift cards.

Honorees will be recognized at the sponsoring institution, as well as prior to the start of the men's semifinal session on Friday night, the women's championship game on Saturday or the men's championship game on Saturday.

This is the fourth year of the program.
