Georgetown College men's basketball was in for another battle Thursday night against Mid-South Conference rival University of Cumberlands. The No. 1 Tigers (7-0, 1-0) get everyone's top game and that was no different against the Patriots (5-3, 0-1). UC opened up the game's largest lead of nine early in the first half of a game with 16 ties and 18 lead changes.

Monty Wilson gave GC the lead for good off a run out in the waning seconds. Dominique Hagans pulled down the rebound when Cumberlands missed a lay-up. The junior threw it the length of the floor to Wilson to help the Tigers pull another one out, 75-72.

"I just have confidence in my game," Wilson said. "I just want the ball at crunch time, and I've got the confidence."

Wilson finished with a game-high 23 points, including the final four, and tallied his current season average. Hagans dropped 16 and Joe Caldwell chipped in with 10.

Deondre McWhorter again led on the boards with 10.

Cumberlands led by two at the break and was up by as many as five in the second half. But the see-saw battle landed in the favor of the home team.

"I was proud of our guys for battling back and coming through with the victory. Obviously we have things we have to improve on, specifically our defense," said GC coach Chris Briggs. "We've got to become a much better defensive team and be more mature and have a more business-like approach to the game. Get ready to play.

"I think these guys will grow up a little bit and get a little more focused and a little more grounded. We'll be okay, but we've got a lot to work on. We are not playing to our potential. We certainly can play better, so we'll just keep plugging and keep working."

Georgetown returns to action 7 pm Tuesday against Martin Methodist.
