BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Senior EKU men’s basketball player Jaron Jones was honored with second team All-Ohio Valley Conference accolades as announced by the league office today. Meanwhile, junior Mike DiNunno earned a spot on the All-Newcomer team.
Voting was done by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Jones, who is in his second year on the squad, burst on to the scene this season after averaging just 2.5 points per game as a junior. The Lexington, Ky., native is the only player in the OVC to rank among the top five in both scoring (16.7 ppg) and field goal percentage (53.6 percent). He became the first Colonel in more than two years to score at least 30 points when he registered a career-best 30 tallies in the win over North Carolina Central on Dec. 6.
Jones has reached the 20-point plateau 13 times in 2011-12, including four of the last five games heading into the OVC tournament. The 6-5 guard not only leads the team in scoring, but ranks second rebounding (4.4 rpg), assists (59) and steals (46). He also stands fifth in the league in minutes played (33.7 mpg).
DiNunno, a transfer from Northern Illinois University, is finishing his first year on the squad as the team’s point guard. He had a career night at Tennessee State on Jan. 28 when he posted 33 points while tying the EKU record in three-pointers made in a game (seven). The Chicago, Ill., native shot 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the floor that night and also chipped in with a season-high seven assists.
For the season, DiNunno has started 29 of 31 games and ranks first on the team in assists (86) and free throw percentage (81.1 percent). His 9.8 ppg average is third best among the Colonels.
Eastern Kentucky (16-15, 7-9 OVC) will next play in the opening round of the 2012 OVC tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 29 in Nashville, Tenn. The Colonels, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, face Southeast Missouri beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
