RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team earned a national ranking in both of the season-ending major polls it was announced Monday.
The Colonels finished No. 21 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Coaches Poll and No. 24 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Poll (media). Eastern Kentucky concluded the season 7-5 overall and 6-2 in Ohio Valley Conference competition to earn a share of the 2011 OVC title.
Eastern nearly shocked Kansas State in the season opener before falling in the final two minutes by a count of 10-7. The Colonels’ most memorable win came on Nov. 5 with an unbelievable 52-48 decision at No. 18 Jacksonville State. EKU found itself trailing by 24 points with 7:25 remaining before rallying with four consecutive touchdowns to take the lead. The Colonels then stopped Jacksonville State on the one-yard line on the final play of the game to preserve the victory.
Eastern Kentucky earned an at-large bid to the 2011 NCAA FCS playoffs and hosted No. 17 James Madison in the opening round. The visitors ended EKU’s season with a last-second field goal to claim a 20-17 win. James Madison went on to fall to eventual national champion North Dakota State in the second round.
The Colonels are slated to return 17 of 22 starters (10 – offense, seven defense) in 2012 including eight first team all-conference players. EKU kicks off the 2012 schedule at Purdue on Sept. 1. Fans can reserve 2012 season tickets by contacting the EKU athletics ticket office at 859-622-2122.
