EKU A Favorite To Win OVC In 2013-14

Basketball Colonels will be on TV to showcase their conference prowess.

RICHMOND, Ky. – At least four Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball games will air live on the ESPN family of networks during the 2013-14 season.

Two Ohio Valley Conference regular season home games will air on ESPNU.  The Colonels’ match-up against defending league champ Belmont on Jan. 16 will begin at 7 p.m. ET.  Rivals EKU and Morehead State will play on the network on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. ET.

“We’re always excited to showcase the EKU program on national television,” Eastern Kentucky University Head Coach Jeff Neubauer said.  “Our games on ESPNU will have OVC championship implications.  A national audience will get to watch these Colonels try to accomplish something special.”

Two more contests are scheduled to air on ESPN3.  Eastern’s games at North Carolina State on Nov. 30 and Wisconsin on Dec. 14 will air on the web based network.

In addition, if the Colonels advance to the OVC Tournament semifinals and finals, those games will be televised nationally as well.  The two semifinal contests will air live on ESPNU.  The championship game on March 8 will be televised on ESPN2.

The first live game event telecast on ESPNU, launched on March 4, 2005, was a Southeast Missouri State/Eastern Kentucky OVC Tournament semifinal game.  The 24-hour college sports television network airs more than 650 live events annually.  ESPNU is available nationwide in approximately 75 million households and has long-term carriage agreements with all 10 of the top multichannel TV providers - Cablevision, Charter, Comcast, Cox, DirecTV (Channel 208), DISH Network (Channel 141), Mediacom, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS TV and AT&T U-verse.

Eastern has already been picked by several national publications as the favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference.  USA Today predicts the Colonels to win the OVC and earn a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Four starters and a total of 13 letter winners return from the 2012-13 squad that won a school record 25 games and posted the second best conference mark at 12-4.  The Colonels advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) and picked up the program’s first victory in a national postseason tournament game in 68 years.

EKU begins its 2013-14 season on Nov. 8 against Florida International at the Kennesaw State Invitational.  Eastern’s first home game is on Nov. 13.
