Changes In Offensive Philosophies Around The OVC Force EKU To Alter Defensive Strategy

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team held its second scrimmage of the spring season Saturday morning. For the second straight time, the offense barely edged the defense with today’s final of 19-16.

The defense was sharp in the early stages, forcing the offense to punt on three straight possessions. Junior defensive lineman Bryce Krebs tallied a third-down sack on the first team offense’s second touch, leading to a punt.

On the second team offense’s second possession, redshirt freshman quarterback Barton Mann found junior wide receiver Deno Montgomery to set up a 1st-and-goal situation. However, the defense held from that point. Senior kicker Andrew Lloyd booted a 23-yard field goal to get the offense on the board.

Senior quarterback Jared McClain sparked the first team offense on its third possession. McClain came up with two big runs, the second of which was around 30 yards, to put the offense into scoring position. Mann came on at quarterback to complete the drive and hit junior wide receiver Taylor Miller on a perfect fade pattern for a 20-yard touchdown.

The defense stepped up on the next drive. An interception by junior defensive back Johnny Joseph was called back due to an offsides penalty. However, just moments later, redshirt freshman Lorenzo McWilliams burst through the line to record a sack and fumble which was recovered by the defense.

Late in the first half, new punter Keith Wrzuszczak booted a beautiful backspin punt that was downed at the five-yard line.

After a brief intermission, the first team offense marched the ball down the field for a second touchdown. That drive featured a heavy dose of new running back Dy’Shawn Mobley. Facing a 4th-and-goal at the two-yard line, McClain pitched the ball wide to Mobley, who proceeded to shake off a couple of tacklers for the score.

Mann led the second team offense on another productive drive late in the scrimmage. That drive mixed in some pass plays along with some key carries by redshirt freshman Kentayvus Hopkins.

Eastern Kentucky has three more official practices remaining before holding its spring game, which is slated for Thursday night, April 24.
