A closed road can cost you time and gas.  People in part of Rockcastle County know the feeling all too well.  One of the main bridges into Brodhead has been closed for a week. It’s causing a detour of about 20 miles for people trying to get in and out of town.

A large hole in the center of the bridge was noticed Friday.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet noticed the bridge was deteriorating and shut it down for safety, causing a headache for people trying to get in and out of Brodhead.

Walter Lee Cash, Broadhead mayor, says about 4,000 people use the bridge that crosses the Dix River along KY 1505 daily.

“We just about had to close shop over here in Brodhead,” said Cash.

“To get whatever they need they've got to come across the bridge,” said Ricky Kirby, a Brodhead resident.

Drivers have had to use about a 15 mile detour via KY 1326.

Wednesday, construction started on a temporary crossover to allow people to cross get into Brodhead via 1505.

“They're raising it up they're installing pipe and stuff along the creek bed essentially they're building a temporary road type structure,” said Amber Hale, public information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

“It's great,” said Kirby.  “It will be great for the people that travel from the other side of the bridge it will be a big help to them.”

Pipes will give the temporary road extra support and allow water to continue to flow.

“It is a smart solution and the quickest one you know to this point that we can come up with,” said Hale.

Emergency vehicles have a route into Brodhead through private property.  Crews will continue to work around the clock.  They hope to have the temporary road open to the public early next week.

The bridge is expected to be repaired and reopened spring of 2014.  The temporary, gravel road will be used until it reopens.

Funding for the temporary road comes from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s emergency funding.
