https://twitter.com/AAdelsonABC36Wednesday, Woodford County High School sent its African American students home with a letter announcing a meeting Thursday morning only for the African American students to address an achievement gap.
After numerous complaints, the school district canceled the meeting, and the Superintendent says he is sorry.
"I want to apologize if anybody was upset, or offended that was certainly not the intent," said Scott Hawkins, Woodford County's Superintendent.
ABC36 News obtained a copy of the letter signed by the high school's assistant principal.
The letter says, "We will be calling all of our African American students down to the cafeteria. Our recent data shows gaps in particular groups of students including free/reduced lunch, Hispanic, and African American, so we are taking these students down to offer some additional forms of support to them."
These two sentences begin the letter, and they're what people are mad about.
"If they would have left off the first paragraph of that letter, and just made it to where everybody was included in this opportunity, it would have been fine," said Candice Jenkins.
"The letter should have never been sent out. Now we have kids that we're gonna have to sit down, and explain to them about this letter. How dare you," said Laverne Plump-Clay.
Woodford's Superintendent says the gap exists, and he truly wants to help close it.
"We have to look at what we can do to help them be successful and try to put all of these things in place," said Hawkins.
He says no faculty from the high school will be disciplined, because of the letter.
