Illegally parking in a handicap spot in Lexington will cost you big money starting Monday.

The city has raised the fine from fifteen dollars to two hundred and fifty dollars.

This comes after the mayor's commission for citizens with disabilities discovered Lexington's fine was one of the lowest in Kentucky.

Parking lot owners are also required to improve signage For the areas next to handicapped spaces, so those who use wheelchair ramps or need extra space to get in and out of vehicles can do so more easily.
