Friends and family of a slain father are gathered in Downtown Lexington Thursday night to pay respects and bring attention to domestic violence.

Police say 44-year-old Librado Romero was shot to death last week while trying to protect his daughter from her ex-boyfriend.

Lexington police say Romero and his family were fast asleep when 18-year-old Edgar Vieyra broke into his home and opened fire.

Vieyra is accused shooting and killing Romero, who police say was protecting his daughter, who was Vieyra's former girlfriend.

He faces several charges, including including murder and violating a domestic violence order.

Meanwhile the vigil honoring Romero is being held at the Fayette County Courthouse Plaza.

Family of Romero say he was a loving father who would do anything for his family.

Members of the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program were on hand to give a message about how the whole community needs to step-up and keep more incidences like this one from happening again.
