VP Debate Posters Auctioned for Murder Victim's Fund

Centre College SAE fraternity brothers raising money for the Hockensmith Memorial Fund by selling and auctioning 2012 VP Debate posters.

It’s been one year since the only 2012 Vice Presidential Debate.  As Centre College celebrates the anniversary, it’s also recovering from the triple murder that shook Danville.  Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity brothers are raising money for the Hockensmith Memorial Fund.

I haven’t met the family; I just was touched by the story and just kind of felt a pull in my heart to start the fund.  I heard the ad on the radio and it all clicked,” said John Minton, a junior at Centre College and SAE Fraternity brother.

Centre College was on lockdown after the triple homicide at ABC Gold Games & More.  Mike and Angela Hockensmith, co-owners of the store and Daniel Smith, a gold buyer, were killed.

“When something like that happens in a small town, it’s magnified a lot more,” said Minton.

Minton knew he wanted to help but it wasn’t until he heard about the Hockensmith Memorial Fund on the radio.

“It just all clicked,” said Minton.  “I wanted to make that fund more available to the Centre community and now through all the debate memorabilia we can make it available to the Danville community and surrounding areas.”

“It was his idea and we has a fraternity just got behind him to help make it happen,” said Nate Benedict, Minton’s fraternity brother.

The Brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon aren’t just collecting donations; they are selling 2012 Vice Presidential Debate posters and auctioning banners the school gave them to raise more money.  About 20 posters from the 2000 Debate are also for auction.  100% of the proceeds will go to the memorial fund. They’ve raised about $3,000.00

“I mean sure that will give them some kind of comfort but I don't think there's anything that can fill in for losing your parents,” said Minton.
