Lexington's Urban County Council voted unanimously Thursday night for a resolution asking state lawmakers to reverse financial cuts made to the child care assistance program.
The council chamber was packed with parents, child care providers and participants who talked about possible job losses and the inability of single parents to afford child care because of the budget cuts.
The state estimates there will be an $86 million shortfall in the budget for the Department for Community Based Services. The department oversees child and adult protection and other programs.
Because of the budget shortfall, the state is cutting child care assistance to low income families and will pay no new subsidies to relatives who are raising neglected or abused children.
