The Fayette County Coroner said a 12-year old girl who was hit by a car while walking on Auburn Drive Wednesday afternoon, died as a result of her injuries.

The victim's name was not released.

Lexington Police said the driver of the car who hit the girl told investigators that she was blinded by the sun and didn't see the girl as she turned left from Eastland Parkway onto Auburn Drive.

“A lady was coming around the corner and she says the sun was so bright she couldn't see,” said Helen McQuinn, who lives at the house where the accident happened.

The Lexington Fire Department said the girl was pinned against a tree in the front yard of a home near where she was initially hit.

Police said the driver was cooperating with authorities.

“Well the whole thing was scary to see all of these police cars and tape in my yard. It was very scary,” McQuinn said.

The Lexington Police Department's Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the deadly accident.

“I've lived here 52 years and we've never had anything like that happen before,” McQuinn said.
