'Rachel Alexandra' underwent surgery at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington Thursday afternoon to drain an abscess that was discovered earlier in the day.

Veterinarians said the 2009 Horse of the Year was bright with a good appetite following the procedure and was even able to graze in the afternoon.

Veterinarians said even though her road toward recovery has remained remarkable following abdominal surgery on February 13, 2013, this latest procedure was a reminder that challenges remain.

"As part of the continuous evaluation and monitoring that Rachel is receiving at Rood & Riddle, an abscess adjacent to her reproductive tract and rectum was found," said Dr. Brett Woodie.

Rood & Riddle reported that the abscess was drained successfully via a standing surgical procedure, throughout which Rachel's vital signs remained normal.

Veterinarians said while this type of hurdle was not unexpected, Rachel will remain at Rood & Riddle for continuous observation as she continues down what has been called "a long road" toward recovery.
