Update: Names Released Of Miners Killed And Injured In Harlan County Mine

The State said Lenny Gilliam of Virginia was killed and Terry Scott and Johnny Nantz were injured in an underground mine accident in Harlan County on Tuesday.
The Kentucky Office of Surface Mining and Licensing said one coal miner was killed and two others were injured in an underground mine in Harlan County on Tuesday.

The deceased miner was identified as Lenny D. Gilliam, 56, of Appalachia, Virginia.

The two injured miners are Terry Scott and Johnny Nantz.  Officials said the miners injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators said preliminary reports indicated the side of a coal pillar burst as the continuous miner machine was operating, causing the miners to be trapped.

The mine is the Huff Creek Mine, located near Holmes Mill on Black Mountain, which is operated by Lone Mountain Processing, a subsidiary of Arch Coal.

This was the second mining-related fatality in Kentucky in 2013.
