A Dunbar High School baseball player is still recovering after he was hurt in a beach accident in Destin, Florida.

Family members told ABC36 that senior Travis Gaines mistimed a wave and dove into shallow water Tuesday afternoon.

The teenager hit his head on the sand and was flown to the hospital in Pensacola, with no feeling from the chest down.

“This has obviously been a tragic incident to an exceptional person,” said Keith Gaines, Travis’ father.

“Travis would also like to express his gratitude for the amazing amount of support and concern and to continue praying for him.”

Support and donations have been pouring in through a Facebook page called “Let’s Rally Around Travis Gaines”.

Travis had plans to play baseball at Centre College next year.

“Everything he spoke of, everything he talked about, his aspirations from a college baseball career is just… he wanted it,” said Luke Dombrowsky, assistant baseball coach at Centre College.

“He wanted opportunities. He wanted to be able to prove himself.”

His family has set up an account with Fifth Third Bank for donations. The Account Number at the bank is: 7381120349. The Routing number: 042101190. All Checks are to be made payable to: "Benefit for Travis Gaines."
