Due to the toxic fumes and smoke from a fire at King Tire Recycling, Incorporated in Stearns in McCreary County, the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross set up an evacuation shelter at McCreary County Park.

The park is located at 2255 N. Highway 27 in Whitley City.

As of this writing, there are 26 people in the shelter, according to the Red Cross.

The Public Protection Cabinet said 40,000 tires had burned by Wednesday evening.

A day care and a factory were evacuated as a precaution.

Some area roads and a railroad were closed.

It's not clear how the fire started, according to investigators.

A spokesman for the Public Protection Cabinet said the business has a history of violations and is located too close to some houses.
